I went to see Jerry Lee Lewis at the Memorial Auditorium a year or so after his career tanked due to his marriage. He shared a bill with a group of black artists, as the only white performer. He did his usual piano-pounding performance, and gave way to the other acts, including a bleached-blonde "Gorgeous George," black singer. Segregation still ruled, and the white audience in a switch were relegated to the balconies. The show was a black show, primarily, after all. A surreal moment from the early sixties.
So, it was not just Billy Graham that paved the way to integration in Chattanooga.
