Controversy - National Geographic Reports on Human - Animal Hybrids

A Mouse with a Human Ear Posted by Hello

See the report in full at National Geographic.

Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Second Medical University in 2003 successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. The embryos were reportedly the first human-animal chimeras successfully created. They were allowed to develop for several days in a laboratory dish before the scientists destroyed the embryos to harvest their stem cells.

In Minnesota last year researchers at the Mayo Clinic created pigs with human blood flowing through their bodies.

And at Stanford University in California an experiment might be done later this year to create mice with human brains.

Scientists feel that, the more humanlike the animal, the better research model it makes for testing drugs or possibly growing "spare parts," such as livers, to transplant into humans.

What new subhuman combination should be produced and for what purpose? At what point would it be considered human? And what rights, if any, should it have?

There are currently no U.S. federal laws that address these issues.

Wow! The world sure is getting strange. If scientists can do these things, what can the millitary do? I can see them creating the locusts with teeth of lions from Revelation just to see if they could. Make sure you check out this article. The hypothetical mice creating human children was a strange speculation.

Interesting stuff. Now I can get that elephant penis transplant that I always wanted... As a scientist (or perhaps just a guy who plays one on TV), I'm generally more afraid of those forces hampering research (e.g., Bush's stem cell research restrictions that pander to the Christian right) than of the researchers, but this is certainly not clear cut. One force that always scares me is the animal rights contingent, which "rescues" lab animals. As was the basis of the British zombie movie 28 Days Later (which is a pretty fun monster movie), the scary part is that chimera or other animal (like your toothy locusts, or worse yet, a monkey infected with a virus) is freed in a rescue mission. More later...

BEEZ,
Remember that scientists must check their pre-911 thinking. LOL

Oh, and I enjoyed 28 Days Later when it was on the big screen.

And there are those that believe the govt was plenty busy pre-911, with conspiracy theories in great abundance that use tests at Tuskegee to question the origin of Aids.
